I am fangirl…

July 16, 2008

… hear me spend.. *KER-CHING!!*

With TVXQ/Dong Bang Shin Ki back in Korea for their comeback and 4th album, lots of TVXQ/DBSK items have made fangirls everywhere the more poorer.

Coming out today, Tohoshinki’s latest single ‘どうして君を好きになってしまったんだろう どうして君を好きになってしまったんだろう ?’ is released with great hopes that it will make No.1 on the Oricon Chart, therefore launching Tohoshinki into the music history books as the First Foreign artist to have such an honour. One can only hope. But I’m doing my bit. I pre-ordered the singles online and also am sending off a friend to Japan today and I’m making her buy copies to help my boys make it up the charts! Whee! FANATIC! That’s right!

Elsewhere, much excitement is building over the highly anticipated photobooks, ‘It’s Stylish’ and ‘Camping’ which make up the ‘A Week Holiday’ set which also includes a DVD. The sets sold out everywhere quickly as fangirls snapped them up to claim the accompanying free goodies. Even more anticipation was the Thai Version of the set of which the DVD comes with English Subtitles. In a bid to support our boys.. I preordered both sets.

In other news, TVXQ also set a record for the most no. of pre-sales in ONE DAY! for their highly anticipated 4th Korean album. 200,000 pre-sales were recorded on the day of the announcement pre-sale. Again, ME! ME! ME!

So I’m officially broke. AGAIN! I expect this phenomenon to occur many times more because I love and support TVXQ!

On a happier note, today I got my Tohoshinki TRICK singles, the complete set in the mail. I’m really happy because I got them for a pretty good bargain, all new & sealed for about USD$8 each, including shipping! Neat, huh?

Yup, I’m a happy but broke bunny..

Now I just can’t wait for all the other stuff to come out..

Will be back soon with some drama reviews!

SuJu for MTV ASIA AWARDS!

June 18, 2008

Though I’m not a regular viewer of MTV anymore, and barely keep up with award shows, my interest in this year’s MTV Asia Awards is Hallyu related, of course!

Who are you voting for for the Best Korean Artist award?

The nominees for this year are :

  • Super Junior
  • Big Bang
  • Wonder Girls
  • SNSD

My beloved DBSK are not nominated this year because they’ve spent the better part of last year promoting activities in Japan. Maybe next year, boys? I’ll vote for you!

So.. obviously from the title of this post, I’m hoping Super Junior will get the honours. Even though I’m still not familiar with everyone in this 13 member super group, I do have my favourites, namely Siwon, HanKyung, Ki Bum, LeeTeuk and Heechul! I’ve seen their movie ‘Attack on the Pin Up Boys’ and I love it.. Haha.. Kudos boys! I hope you win it!

Vote for them at http://kr.mtvasiaawards.com/Korea/FunStuff/widget/artist/19

My verdict on the other acts :

Well, I only just started liking Big Bang.. and though I enjoy their music.. I hold the right to retain judgement until further notice. Oh, Taeyang, if you’re reading this. I ❤ you!

Wonder Girls – again.. I’ve only heard one song, seen no performances.. and I don’t think I should say anything about them yet.

SNSD – Hmm.. should I be honest or refrain? Well.. Okay.. Given that this 9 member girl group has garnered some rather unwanted attention lately for the wrong reasons, I made an effort to actually research into them just to give them the benefit of the doubt.

I’d like to state now, given the rumours flying around about Xiah Junsu and leader Taeyeon.. that I left out that part in my research. Xiah Junsu can date anyone he wants. He’s old enough and he’s been in the music industry wayyyy too long not to be dating. And it gets lonely out on tours, so finding someone who understands the pressure of fame and the industry would do him some good. Also.. This is gonna be his girlfriend in like yonks, do you really think this is gonna last? I DON’T THINK SO. So I laugh in the face of rumours and have let this issue go. Period.

Back to SNSD, given that I have spent hours watching the girls appearances and surfed a few SoShi sites, and others such as SS501, Shinhwa, etc.. I feel completely confident in saying.. I don’t like them, don’t think I ever will.. Though they have already released an apology for their past transgressions and behaviours, which I think was more written by their PR and handlers than anything, I feel that they have not done enough to rectify the mistakes of insulting and making fun of their sunbaes. In future, I’d like to see Tiffany adjust more to the country she has adopted as her home now, and really study up on culture. The rest need to find their own identities, and also WEAR SOME CLOTHES PLEASE. It’s rather disconcerting to find upskirt photos of a group that’s marketing itself as cute.

But, good luck to the girls in future, I’m sure after a quick discipline course from Big Daddy SM and some copious canings, SNSD will show a better face to their fans and set better examples of themselves. Nuff Said.

VOTE SUJU FOR BEST KOREAN ARTIST!

SIWON! TAKE OFF YOUR SHIRT! AAAAAAAAAA!~

Epic High!

June 16, 2008

The title of this post is both for the fantastic feeling I’m having this morning and also for the Korean hip hop group, Epik High, who’s music I’m just totally getting into thanks to my 동생, serre.

Okay, I realise that I haven’t update this blog in.. two months? ERRKK! I’m sorry, I’m sorry.. I’ve been so extremely busy.. that I kinda neglected this blog.. But I do have EXCITING NEWS!

Well, I think I should say that I’m no longer alone! (As a Dong Bang Shin Ki fan, I mean) A while back.. I joined the TVfXQ Brunei FC forum (With honourable mention to my 동생 Bellex!).. and it’s been awesome ride since then.. I suddenly became the ‘Super Senior Unnie’ cos I’m the oldest, save for one! and I helped out to plan their first gathering, which just so happened to be yesterday.. Whee!

So yes, I’ve been kinda busy, kinda happy, kinda sad, kinda overwhelmed by this new side of KPop fandom.. But I’ll try to do better in future with updating this site.. especially since more of my little sisters from the forum will be visiting regularly.. Eep! They’re gonna keep me on my toes from now on.

Honourable mentions to : Myzah Ajjushi Half-eaten Cookie, Sue Home Princess and Yu, Mrs U-Know.

Not forgotten

May 1, 2008

Hi everyone!

It’s me, Chung Ae. I’m sorry I haven’t been updating lately.. I’ve been so caught up in my work.. (And also watching all the DBSK videos!) that I haven’t had much time to post. But no worries, I’m still here! (^_^)

So I’ve been listening to ‘Love in the Ice’ on overtime. I just watched DBSK’s performance at the Soul Power Tokyo Summit.. and it is truly amazing. I get goosebumps everytime. Wow.. Because I’m still watching the videos of them in their first album days, I can’t help but notice the huge change in the boys appearance from teens, to young men! Have you seen Max lately.. whoaaa! Slow down your growing, Max, or you might hurt someone!

Since I last posted, I’m happy to report I now have copies of All About DBSK Season 2 and Their Non-stop Hits Mix CD. So I’m happily taking my time to open each and every disc and watch/listen to it at my leisure.

I was wondering if there are any DBSK fans from Brunei who read this blog.. because I have an inkling of an idea. Actually, I’m curious about how many fans there are within the Borneo region. I was thinking how the Big East, Cassiopeia, Asteria (Unofficial International Fanclub), and other fan clubs regularly do huge things for the member’s birthdays, like send them parcels and goodies.. make DVDs compiling video clips etc. and I was wondering if the Brunei/Borneo DBSK fans would like to do something similar. My thoughts were along the lines of a DBSK Carnival, watching Season 1 and Season 2 of ABDBSK on the big screen, games, auctions, activities, etc. giving the profits to charity in DBSK’s name, therefore spreading the love of the fans and also all of this would be filmed and eventually edited into a DVD for DBSK so that they know their Brunei/Borneo fans exist. (Because let’s face it, Brunei would probably draw a big blank for our boys… so we need to make them aware that we exist!)

Of course because I live in Brunei, I was thinking of making it Brunei-centric. But it would be lovely if DBSK fans from Sabah and Sarawak, especially Miri, could come along and participate in the fun.

This is all just an idea.. I’d love for it to happen, but it’s a lot of work for one person. And I have no idea in reality how many DBSK fans there are in Brunei… so if you live in Borneo and love DBSK.. let me know! Because I can and will make this happen if there are enough fans to have this celebration.

Take care!

Vacation – Dong Bang Shin Ki (Review)

April 23, 2008

For the newly inducted into the fandom of Dong Bang Shin Ki, Vacation was a four part drama filmed back in 2005/6?. U-Know, Micky and Hero each filmed their own segment, while Max and Xiah (*sigh!*) filmed a segment together.

U-Know’s segment is called ‘Cassiopeia’, which is the name of their official fan club in Korea. It’s a sweet love story that takes place in a children’s home/nursery, and pays tribute to their fans. Xiah and Changmin take a holiday in a remote countryside village, where they get themselves into trouble and the two city boys try and help out. Hero’s segment is rather exciting, a lot of action and drama in the city getting mixed up with gangsters. Micky goes back to a village he lived in his childhood and meets a distant memory.

Obviously, we know that the boys are singers/performers first, and not actors.. But Vacation is an earnest attempt at making shorts that are humorous yet sweet, action- filled, and very human.

I particularly like Xiah’s and ChangMin’s segment as it was very, very funny, although I confess to being very, very embarassed for ChangMin. (You’ll know what I’m talking about when you see it.) Action star Hero proved a little bit too much for me.. somehow his character didn’t suit Hero the person. Which is why I have misgivings about his segment, but there were some particularly good moments, strangely when Hero wasn’t acting as himself. Despite the element of the fantastical with Micky’s story, it was very, very beautiful, and thoughtful, and I really liked the ending, and that moved me to tears most of all. U-Know was brave and great, though there were some moments that proved to be… um.. very embarassing. You have to give the leader street cred for that.

This is a must-have for any DBSK/TVXQ! fan.. It was a perfect way to start off my collection (of originals).  Don’t forget to enjoy the NG’s (bloopers)  on the DVD. I was disappointed that the NG’s themselves did not have subtitles. I only knew what was going on thanks to the properly subtitled one I saw on YouTube. There were more problems with the subtitles on the DVD because I don’t think that it was particularly thorough or timed correctly, there were some moments that there was a lot of talking going on that drew total blanks for me, so I guess I’ll have to learn proper Korean to understand that. A cool extra is that TVXQ! filmed new intros for the feature and the NG’s, you get to see Hero in his platinum anime blonde stage.

What are you waiting for, go get your copy now! Or if you do have one, go watch yours!

Dong Bang Shin Ki Vacation DVDDong Bang Shin Ki Vacation DVD Back

My first original DBSK/TVXQ! purchase arrived today. Yay! It’s their Vacation (Uncut Version) DVD. You can’t get it on YesAsia, so I recommend you do a search on eBay because that’s where I got it. What’s great about it is that it has English subtitles, a special intro to their NG’s (Bloopers), and also an intro to the feature presentation.

I haven’t yet watched the dvd.. but I’ll review it later when I get the chance… Yippee!

If music be the food of love, then TVXQ play on!

April 20, 2008

TVXQ! Dong Bang Shin Ki! Tohoshinki! By whatever name you know them, TVXQ are arguably one of the best boybands to come out of Korea and have made a huge impact in Asia.

Dong Bang Shin Ki circa \"O\" Japan

L-R: Xiah Junsu, Micky YooChun, Hero JaeJoong, Max ChangMin, U-Know YunHo.

Xiah, Micky, Hero, Max and U-Know debuted with their single “Hug” back in 2004, and instantly became a hit on the charts with their harmonic voices, their boyish good looks and playful charm. Their name translates roughly as “Rising Gods Of The East”, and perhaps it was prophetic, as they are now one of the major bands is Asia with their universal appeal. Their music is heard as far as places Brazil and Peru, and their appeal is such that they have rabid fans in many countries who take pains to learn their dances and upload it onto YouTube.

Their talents don’t just stop at upbeat Korean pop, as of now, TVXQ! have released their 3rd Japanese Album, mostly of ballads, proving that these boys don’t just drop dance moves like it’s hot, but can croon with the best of them.

I have mixed feelings about saying that I only discovered TVXQ! about 5 weeks ago. I am happy because I’ve discovered a Korean band that makes me feel like a teenager again (and I am 26!), but I am sad because I feel like I’ve missed out on a lot. But I am quickly catching up, and I think I can say that I’m part of Cassiopeia soon enough.

A short story on how I discovered TVXQ! Those five weeks ago, on a lazy Sunday afternoon like this one.. I went to Batu Bersurat to see my best friend, when I happened to drop by one of the many DVD shops there to check out some new boxsets. I wasn’t really looking for any Korean dramas at the time, but nevertheless I still wandered around the shop for quite a bit of time. Usually, DVD shops here have this horrible habit of either playing trance music or latest hits at this deafening volume that you can even hear from your car when you pass by, but unusually enough that day, perhaps to suit my rather mellow mood, this DVD shop was playing a very pretty song on the sound system. I was so surprised by it, I actually asked the girl at the cashier about it. She took out the cover of the DVD that had been actually been playing, and without a second thought, bought it right out of her hand.

When I got home, I immediately watched the DVD and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked all the songs and videos on the DVD and played it non-stop for the next two days. After some clever googling, I found out the name of my new favourite band in the world, TVXQ! The song I heard that day was “Hug.” And the rest is history, since I am sitting here now, typing out my little story. (In case you’re wondering what DVD it is, I think it’s one DVD out of the All About DBSK Vol. 1, the one with the Music Videos and KBS Performances.)

Though the DVD itself is pirated (as are most DVDs, CDs and VCDs in Brunei.. I am grateful for it because it introduced me to a whole new world of music. I had listened to Jay Chou, Ken Hirai, F4 and NRG before, but this was my first experience with K-Pop, and I like it. I’ve got Kang Ta, BoA and Shinhwa lined up for my next purchases. I spent a minor fortune on YesAsia.com just buying some of the essential TVXQ! back catalog. I’m so hooked that I even managed to get myself a copy of Bonjour Paris! on eBay after some amazingly competitive bidding. I will review all my purchases as soon as the arrive. (^-^)b

So who do I like in TVXQ!/DBSK? The answer is simple.. ALL OF THEM!

It’s really hard to choose a favourite member, because each one of them has their own charisma.. and I have watched enough interviews and videos on YouTube to get an idea on each of them.

There’s no doubt that Hero Jaejoong is definitely the pretty boy of the group. One look at his delicate handsome looks, and anyone would agree he is entrancing from first glance. He seems to be the ‘mother’ of the group. The oldest and perhaps the one with the most angelic voice, as well as looks. I love how he can be kooky at times and despite his ‘cold looks’ is very warm and caring.

I adore Micky because he seems to be the ‘deep, sensitive one.’ His rich deep voice rounds out the boys well. He seems to have a very good one on one relationship with each of the guys, perhaps especially Junsu and ChangMin. He might be the one who talks least of all during the interviews, but he is the most musically talented out of all of them, having written several songs and is an excellent piano player.

XIAH! JUNSU! Ahhhh! Whenever I see Xiah on screen, he makes me want to scream his name because his excitable energy seems to affect me. Two words that describe him : Dolphin Boy! He seems to have the character of a dolphin, curious and lovable.. and also he can squeak like one too. He is one of the lead vocals besides Jaejoong, as he has an amazing powerful voice that can be honey or a projection of feeling.

Max is the youngest, and has an aura of quiet intelligence, but also of schoolboyish sweetness. But don’t let that fool you, he can be mischievous as well. If Xiah’s voice has power, then Max has amazing range. He can switch from deep richness to an amazing alto vocal in a breath. He can be too honest, and strangely funny. I’d really like Max to try and record his own album to find out what genres he can get out of his voice.

Rounding up the group, and definitely not the least, U-Know, though the 2nd oldest, is the leader of the group. Probably one of the best dancers, his vocal, though not comparably powerful or special to the rest completes the sound of TVXQ! He has excellent rapping skills, and takes his responsibilities as leader seriously, very much aware of his group members feelings, and happy to take charge in any situation.

A few songs that I recommend for a first time listener :

From the first album: “Hug” and “Tri-Angle”

From their 2nd : “Rising Sun” and “One”

From their 3rd : “O”, “You’re My Miracle”

Japanese Tracks : “Choosey Lover” “Step By Step” “Aisenai Aishitai” “Sky” “Begin”
